According to the World Bank, that was the population of India in 2011. By 2030, it is projected that India will have overtaken China as the world’s most populous country
If each one of those 1,241,491,960 people went to the toilet just twice a day, that’s an awful lot of pee and poo in just one day
For a country with universal sanitation provision that would be perhaps an amusing statistic on a quiz show. For India, where many of the population lack basic toilet facilities and must relieve themselves in the open, it is a major health hazard.
One measure proposed a few weeks ago to reduce the number of people forced to do their business outside was that women should not accept an offer of marriage unless the groom could offer an internal toilet in his house. This ‘no toilet, no wife’ ploy it was hoped would encourage the groom’s family to install a toilet in their house (http://tinyurl.com/d2qgqfb)
Now another suggestion to discourage people from doing their business in public is to blow whistles and bang drums to draw attention to anyone caught doing so (http://tinyurl.com/cgtgebb)
The idea is that by humiliating them, they will be less likely to urinate or defecate in public again. I can’t help thinking, though, that providing a musical accompaniment, complete with a drumroll, as they do their business might well be seen as a compliment by some men, and not a deterrent.
The basturds are by nature exhibitionists who find gross bodily functions funny.
I fear this plan may back-fire !
